Young people who arrive in Canada as refugees or newcomers face a unique set of challenges—navigating a new education system, learning a new language, and balancing family expectations with the desire to belong. At OCRSS, we believe that with the right support, these young people can not only overcome these obstacles but thrive as future leaders in our community. Our youth mentorship programme was created to provide that support, pairing newcomer youth with caring mentors who offer guidance, encouragement, and a pathway to success.
We match youth aged 12 to 24 with mentors who share similar cultural backgrounds or who have experienced the settlement journey themselves. Mentors meet regularly with their mentees to discuss school, career aspirations, and the challenges of adapting to life in Canada. The relationship is built on trust and mutual respect, with mentors serving as role models and advocates rather than authority figures. Many of our mentors are former refugees or children of refugees who understand firsthand the experiences of their mentees.

The impact of mentorship extends far beyond individual success. When youth feel supported and valued, they are more likely to give back to their communities, mentor others in turn, and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive society. We have seen programme participants go on to pursue university degrees, enter skilled trades, and become active volunteers and advocates within the Oromo community. If you are a young person seeking support or an adult interested in becoming a mentor, we encourage you to reach out. Together, we are building the next generation of leaders.
