Language is far more than a means of communication—it is a bridge to employment, education, healthcare, and meaningful participation in community life. For refugee families arriving in Canada, learning English (or French) is one of the most powerful tools for integration. At OCRSS, we have witnessed firsthand how access to culturally responsive language support transforms the settlement experience and empowers newcomers to build independent, fulfilling lives in British Columbia.
Strong language skills enable refugees to understand their rights, navigate systems, and advocate for themselves and their families. They increase employability, support children's academic success when parents can engage with schools, and reduce isolation by facilitating connections with neighbours and community members. Unfortunately, many newcomers face barriers such as trauma, interrupted education, or limited prior exposure to English. Our language support services are designed to address these challenges with patience, cultural sensitivity, and practical, real-world focus.
Our language support offerings include:
We recognise that language learning is not only about grammar and vocabulary but also about building confidence and reducing the fear of making mistakes. Our programmes create safe, welcoming spaces where newcomers can practise without judgement. Many participants form lasting friendships and support networks through our language activities, reinforcing that integration is both a personal and a community endeavour. If you or someone you know is struggling to access language support, reach out to OCRSS—we are here to help you find the right resources for your journey.
