Finding a place to call home is one of the most critical challenges faced by refugee families arriving in British Columbia. At the Oromo Cultural Resettlement Services Society (OCRSS), we recognise that stable housing forms the foundation upon which families can rebuild their lives, access employment, enrol their children in school, and integrate into their new communities. Our housing support programme was designed specifically to address the unique barriers that newcomers face when navigating the Canadian rental market.
We work closely with landlords, housing co-operatives, and municipal housing agencies across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley to connect refugee families with suitable accommodations. Our staff provide culturally responsive support in Oromo, Amharic, and English, ensuring that families understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants. Every family we assist receives personalised guidance tailored to their household size, budget, and preferred location.
Our housing support services include:
Securing housing is only the first step. We continue to support families after move-in with information on utilities, neighbourhood resources, and how to maintain a positive tenancy. Through workshops and one-on-one counselling, we help families build the skills and confidence they need to sustain their housing long term. Our goal is to ensure that every family we serve transitions from arrival to independence with a safe, stable place to call home in British Columbia.
